SHAH ALAM: Last September 18th, the school kicked off its Merdeka week celebrations in energetic and lively spirits and a chorus of Merdeka songs. Enthusiastic chants of “Merdeka!” resonated throughout the school.

This annual celebration marks the historic moment when the nation was declared independent, and today, it continues to inspire patriotism, cultural richness, and a sense of togetherness that defines Malaysia. Throughout the week, students participated in several activities and competitions related to our country to foster patriotism. There were colouring competitions, costume contests, poster drawing competitions, and more!

On Tuesday, the lower-level students participated in a colouring contest, while the upper-level students and the secondary students participated in a poster drawing contest and did crossword puzzles about Malaysia with the teachers.

On the third day of the week, the upper-level students engaged in a Merdeka discussion with vice principal Ustaz Anas, so they could better understand and appreciate all the sacrifices that were made by the people who fought for our country’s independence.

On Thursday, the upper-level and secondary students were treated to a Malaysian movie related to Independence Day. Our Tintapreneurs (Kelab Usahawan Muda) took the opportunity to sell popcorn and other snacks during this time.

The week culminated on September 22nd, Friday, with the closing ceremony of the Merdeka Event. Themed “Retro Malaya 60-an”, the extravagant affair started with a speech from Ustaz Anas, a patriotic song performance from 5 Investigator, a quirky retro dance from 3 Inventor, an exciting gimmick, and wonderful performances from the upper-level and secondary students that recalled the days of Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese and British colonisation, before Malaysia won its independence.

The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the fashion show, where teachers and students strutted the runway in their best, most fashionable outfits from Malaysia’s 1960’s. It was a fitting way to end the week and one that we hope will continue to spark enthusiasm and love for our country’s colourful history.

Thought on the story?
